If you’re a normal follower of The Ninja Legion, you might be asking yourself, “What the hell is Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D. and who in the blue blazes are Not for the Cool Kids?” Let me first start off by giving you a bit of background about who Not for the Cool Kids are and what they do. There’s is a group very similar to The Ninja Legion but instead centering around the Otaku Generation they focus on the world and fandom of ‘B’ Movies. In their words they are, “Dedicated to the unrecognized, under appreciated, and unforgettable movies you’ve never seen.” I’ll be the first to admit that I have never been much for the American B-movie scene. However, I have grown to love the wonderfully hokey B-movies of the Asian culture over the years.
After an awesome night with their crew and a screening of Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D., my perspective on American B-movies has forever changed. I wouldn’t necessarily speak of the movies themselves as being worth the watch, but the people that are into this sub-culture are very similar to the Otaku’s of our world; just a good group of people enjoying what they love.
Now, on to Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D. which, as you may have already guessed, takes place in New York City. A detective by the name of Harry Griswald ends up at a kabuki performance and that’s where things go wrong. During the commotion of the fight, Harry is given the spirit of a great Kabuki master. Now he must defeat the evil force that is playing hop scotch through the universe before taking over the earth. Of course during his journey he has a very fine looking Japanese woman as his guide while he fights the corruption within the city. If you want to hear the rest of my thoughts on the film you will have to jump over to Not for the Cool Kids Podcast of Sgt. Kabukiman where I was invited to give my thoughts on the movie and debate the finer points with the guys.
I enjoyed my time at the Not for the Cool Kids studio and will be looking forward to having them over to The Ninja Legion for the viewing of Detroit Metal City. Be sure to stay tuned as we will be bringing more nerd shenanigans and B-movie glory to you guys very soon!
