Held at Bourbon Street and The Terrace in downtown Baltimore, Bit Gen Gamerfest 6 is a rock concert featuring some of the biggest and best names in the video game music scene. Held July 30, 2011 for only $18 you could watch such bands as Entertainment System, The One Ups, Rare Candy, Brentlefloss and the Cartridge Family, and fourteen more. For ten hours Baltimore Maryland was the most hip place on the planet Earth blasting the musical stylings of the classic console’s very best. What was thought to be mere background noise to a game play is now being brought to the front stage with a frenetic fervor. Classics like Castlevania, Contra, The Super Mario Bros, and Ninja Gaiden were given pop, techno, and even metal face lifts. Not a single artist disappointed with their performance and single face in that venue was left unmelted. Two stages seemed barely enough stage for every band as the night would down and the energy ramped up. But nothing could prepare any of us for the phenomenon that was The Protomen. What is possibly he most dynamic live performance I’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing was the tale of a post apocalyptic future told through a riveting rock opera. It gave me chills.
What began as an ambitious music and art by Entertainment System front man John DeCampos and fellow band member Chris Baines has evolved into an event so spectacular that there was no question as to whether it was worth missing a full day of Otakon. None stop energy, retro arcades, and make Bit Gen a art/culture/ music festival I hope is around for a long time from now. Rock on nerds. Rock on…
